IT’S VE Day on Friday, a bank holiday where we can put out the bunting, crack open a tin of stout and enjoy a spam fritter or two.

And yes we damn well should because never has something from the past resonated so much with the present.

On May 8, 1945, our mums and dads, grandparents and great grandparents, celebrated with street parties, singing, dancing and unadulterated hope for the future after Hitler had been defeated.

Hope. Remember that? Well we all should because it’s what makes us what we are. Without it there is only despair and defeat.

And we don’t do defeat.

Ignore the doom-mongers and numbers obsessed naysayers, we DO have coronavirus on the ropes.

The stats are going in the right direction. Together we are winning this new war.
