The world’s most famous Scotland fan last night urged our boys to do us proud as they return to a major tournament for the first time in 23 years.
Sir Rod Stewart spoke for the Tartan Army when he also sent a message of encouragement to Denmark captain Christian Eriksen.
At 2pm today, with just 12,000 fans in the stadium for their opener against the Czech Republic, the Hampden roar will be quieter than usual. But millions of Scots at home and abroad will see Scotland grace their first major tournament since the World Cup in France in 1998.
Sir Rod joined those urging Steve Clarke’s team to do their best, and spoke of his hope Christian Erikson will make a speedy recovery after the Dane’s horror collapse on Saturday.
He received CPR on the pitch during the match between Denmark and Finland and is now stable in hospital.
Sir Rod said: “May the Good Lord be with Christian Eriksen and our Scots boys.
“A few shots from outside the box please.” And he revealed he’d be joining the Tartan
Army when we face England next Friday, saying: “See you at Wembley Friday evening.”
Sir Rod and most the country is at fever pitch today over our return to the big stage.
Scotland captain Andy Robertson says he’s hoping he and his teammates can put a smile on people’s faces”. He added: “Kids, probably even teenagers and early 20-year-olds, won’t have witnessed us in a major tournament.
“The fact that’s now going to happen, I hope it inspires a nation. I hope people are happy.
“You can feel a real buzz around the country already. We hope that continues for the duration of the tournament.”
