Social Media Firms Must Do More To Halt This Vile Misogyny - Giants Urged To Take Action

AN MP who took refuge in a safe house after being targeted by an online stalker is demanding social media giants do more to stem sexist abuse.

Mum-of-three Carol Monaghan, SNP MP for Glasgow North West, said her family needed protection after escalating threats.

She’d rushed back to Scotland from Westminster after her office staff received a detailed threat.

After landing, she was met by police who escorted her home, before taking the family to a new address.

She spoke out after Jonathan Bell, 35, pleaded guilty to conduct which caused her fear or alarm.

Carol, 48, had been targeted during an online hate campaign and described her feelings of dread when told of the threat.

She said: “Receiving that phone call from my office staff, warning me the threat had been made, changed everything.

“All I could think about was keeping my family safe. I’d chosen this public life, they hadn’t.

“I hardly even remember the journey from London to Glasgow. The police were waiting when I landed and escorted me home.

“Officers stayed close by and the next morning they took me and my family somewhere safe.”
