THE Scottish Government has taken its first steps towards producing vaccine passports to allow Scots to holiday abroad this year.

But officials warned yesterday that the plans were still in the early stages and would not meet the travel date of May 17 which has been suggested by the UK Government.

Scotland’s clinical director Jason Leitch suggested Scots would not be able to enjoy non-essential travel out of the country “for quite some time” after May 17.

Leitch stated: “Travel remains a significant risk, you could argue the most significant risk, both for exporting and importing cases.

“The World Health Organisation have it as one of the key priorities in controlling the pandemic.

“That said, we understand even if you remove tourism there are a lot of people who need to travel overseas to see family and to see loved ones.

“We want that open for them as quickly as we possibly can and then, of course, we want tourism back for those industries.”
