Drivers urged to take care as experts fear rise in accidents when lockdown eases

Scotland faces an increase in road accidents as the coronavirus restrictions ease further on April 26.

As more drivers take to the roads, experts say collisions could soar by up to up to a fifth.

Warmer weather and the desire to see family and friends will contribute to the rise. Another factor is that many people have lost their driving confidence during the lockdowns.

One in four drivers admits to feeling nervous about making a long journey in a car when restrictions are relaxed.

Research by insurance firm NFU Mutual shows there was a 22 per cent increase in collisions in June 2020 when the first lockdown was eased.

Young drivers and those living in cities who have not needed to drive during lockdown are the most likely to be involved in a collision when the rules relax. NFU Mutual motor insurance specialist Jade Devlin said: “Our research shows that millions will be taking to the roads for holidays and visits when lockdown eases.
