They went out with barely as much as a whimper – with two hits off the post the best they could muster.
And that is perhaps the biggest worry of all for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
This was the Gunners’ biggest game of the season, the last shot at a trophy and the final hope of getting back into Europe next season.
And Arsenal’s players just did not show up – yet again.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a couple of efforts off the woodwork but, overall, it was pretty limp stuff.
Manager Arteta said: “We are really disappointed. We have to congratulate Villarreal. We tried everything until the last minute. We deserved to win the game but the details define these ties.
“We had three big chances, they didn’t have anything but they are through.”
