The Glaswegian won a deciding frame against the Rocket to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championship.
McGill let out a roar of delight as the brown ball dropped en route to a run of 85 as he KO’d one of the game’s greats 13-12.
He had returned for the evening session 10-6 upon the six-time champion, only for O’Sullivan to haul their encounter back to 10-10.
But McGill ended O’Sullivan’s frame-winning streak at six to go 11-11 before once again reining in the Rocket after he went within one frame of victory.
While the 30-year-old enjoyed a Sheffield shock, fellow Scot John Higgins believes snooker’s very own Class of 92 will never be repeated.
