LABOUR is facing an uphill battle to take back its former heartlands as Britain prepares for its first elections since 2019.

We visited Wolverhampton to meet voters who will decide one of the crucial races on Thursday.

The election for West Midlands mayor is a critical test for Keir Starmer to see whether the party can rebuild the Red Wall which turned blue in 2019.

Tory Andy Street won here in 2017, beating Labour to become mayor by fewer than 4,000 votes.

Liam Byrne, a minister under Gordon Brown, is trying to topple the ex-John Lewis boss.
