Rory McIlroy has dismissed the proposed Saudi-backed Super Golf League as a greed-driven “money grab”.

And McIlroy predicted the plan will crash and burn in the same way as football’s European Super League.

Top players including world No.1 Dustin Johnson (above) have been threatened with expulsion from the PGA Tour and the European Tour if they sign the multimillion-pound contracts on offer to join the breakaway SGL, which is scheduled to launch next autumn.

But McIlroy counted himself out last night, saying there is more to the top-level sport than just cash. He said: “You saw what happened in the UK and in Europe with the European Super League.
