Giggs, 47, is accused of causing actual bodily harm to PR worker Kate Greville, 36.
He faces an additional charge of coercive and controlling behaviour between December 2017 and November 2020.
The maximum sentence for assault occasioning actual bodily harm is five years. Giggs was arrested following an alleged bust-up at his £1.7million home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, in November last year.
Giggs has also been charged with the common assault of a woman in her 20s, understood to be a relative of Ms Greville during the same incident.
The maximum sentence for common assault is six months.
The former Old Trafford winger is due to appear at Manchester and Salford magistrates court next Wednesday.
