Boris Johnson faces fresh accusations of cronyism after it emerged an old Bullingdon Club pal was picked from 173 applicants for a sleaze watchdog role.

Former lawyer Ewen Fergusson has landed a five-year term on the Committee on Standards in Public Life, which monitors ministers’ conduct and ethics in government.

Labour called it an “utter joke” as the huge number of rival applicants was revealed in an answer to a parliamentary question yesterday.
