Labour could be about to lose Hartlepool – a party stronghold for more than 60 years.
A shock poll suggests its candidate, Dr Paul Williams, might get just 42% of votes at next month’s by-election – with Tory Jill Mortimer sweeping to victory on 49%.
That means Ms Mortimer, a landowning barrister, would notch up a 20-point increase for the Tories and become their first MP in the North East seat since 1959.
