It is around 8pm, and a doctor is back home from his hospital shift. He is finally safe from the front line of the Covid-19 fight.
Yet his whirring mind is still in that hospital. The specific scene which he cannot escape is the moment today a family was told their child had died.
He doesn’t want to burden his partner, so he’s alone with the devastating image.
Thankfully, he is texting a volunteer for Shout, a 24/7 text mental health support service launched last year with the backing of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Yesterday, Prince William posted a video urging frontline workers to text the helpline as part of Our Frontline, a support programme launched by he and Kate last month that also includes Mind, Samaritans, and Hospice UK.
He said: “When you spend all day taking care of others, it is easy to forget that you need to take care of yourself too. But it’s OK to say when you’re not feeling OK, and there is support available to you.”
