Gas boss' relief as virus buries bad strike news

A BRITISH Gas chief has been accused of “celebrating a global pandemic” after he said Covid-19 had helped keep a five-day strike by his workers out of the news.

In footage from a conference call, managing director Matthew Bateman, 52, speaks of the “relatively low coverage” the strike by engineers over new contracts had received.

He says: “No one would wish these events, but obviously Covid and what is going on in America to some extent has taken the headline space.”
