UNION leaders are demanding a pay rise for key workers helping the country through the crisis.
The call comes as figures show four in 10 key workers – around 3.7 million people – are paid less than £10 a hour.
To mark International Workers’ Day this May Day, the TUC is launching its #ThankAWorker campaign.
People are being urged to praise frontline staff – such as an NHS worker, carer, bus driver or postie – through things such as posting a thank you video on social media.
TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady believes the workers are not just worthy of gratitude, they should also get more money.
She said: “Everyone who’s kept Britain going through this pandemic deserves a pay rise.”
At least 85 NHS staff and 23 in social care have died of the coronavirus.
The TUC says workers putting their lives at risk should be rewarded with fair pay and conditions.
