THE match may have been a bit of a washout. But England and Scotland fans were on top of their games as they drank their nations dry for this once-in-a-generation encounter.
On both sides of the border, millions watched in pubs and at home as England’s hopes of a comfortable victory to ease them into the next round vanished in a 0-0 draw.
And with city centres empty before kick-off, tens of thousands more packed fan zones in Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow Green.
Heavy rain in London and the South East was like water off a duck’s back to crowds forced to wait a year for the Covid-delayed clash. Further north and in Scotland all the fans soaked up was beer.
Retired engineer Phil Storey, 62, watching with a group on Newcastle’s Quayside said: “It’s a great atmosphere and a great way of feeling like you are in a crowd for the game. There are a few Scotland fans in, but that just adds to the mix.”
