IT was honours even last night in the “Battle of Britain” as the Euro 2020 clash between England and Scotland ended in a draw.
The point keeps both nations’ hopes of qualifying for the last 16 alive.
There was an electric atmosphere inside Wembley Stadium, where more than 17,000 Three Lions fans and 3,000 Scotland supporters had bellowed their hearts out.
But England fans were much less happy with the result, booing the players after the final whistle.
They had been the favourites with Scotland outsiders at 12-1. But betting giant Betfair reported more wagers had been placed backing the Scots.
Both teams took the knee before the game. Some boos were drowned out by a wave of cheers and applause.
THRILLED
Both sides had their chances in the torrential rain. England came particularly close early on when Jon Stones hit the post with a header.
Fans were thrilled to have seen their country’s team play live after so long.
England supporters Dave Ryan, 51, and his best mate Mike Foster, 52, who was belatedly celebrating his birthday, had arrived at the West London stadium three hours before kick-off.
Cambridge United fan Dave, a teacher from Bishop’s Stortford, Herts, was determined to enjoy the game as he originally had seven pairs of tickets for matches at the tournament.
But because of Covid restrictions he was only able to attend this one and the second semi-final at Wembley.
He said: “It’s still a decent result, even though we always want to beat Scotland. We just have to do it against the Czech Republic. I try not to think about winning it as there’s been so many disappointment, but I really think we can win it.
