Stripping over-75s of free TV licences on the 20th anniversary of the lifeline is a kick in the teeth for the elderly, say campaigners.

Activists are speaking out as the date for pensioners to start paying nearly £160 a year rapidly approaches – at the worst time for them.

Age UK charity director Caroline Abrahams said: “To start charging the over-75s now would be an insult to all those older people already struggling with the loneliness and isolation that this lockdown is creating.”
