Ali Harbi Ali is accused of fatally stabbing the 69-year-old MP at a constituency surgery last Friday.
His appearance at London’s Old Bailey came as the Southend West MP’s community held a two-minute silence in his memory.
Ali was handed a provisional trial date of March 7, 2022 by Mr Justice Sweeney following a brief hearing.
The 25-year-old appeared via videolink from Belmarsh high-security prison, south-east London.
Ali wore a grey sweatshirt and a face mask and sat at a desk flanked by a prison guard. He spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.
He was not asked to enter pleas to charges of murdering Sir David and preparing acts of terrorism.
Ali is alleged to have repeatedly stabbed the politician at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.
Mr Justice Sweeney remanded him in custody until November 5.
