VLADIMIR Putin is turning up the heat on the West by scheduling navy military drills off the coast of Ireland.

With tensions rising over Ukraine, the move was described by Simon Coveney, the country’s foreign affairs minister, as “not welcome”. However, he admitted Dublin was powerless to stop them.

Artillery drills at the beginning of next month will take place in international waters – but within both Irish-controlled airspace and the country’s exclusive economic zone.

The exercises will take place 150 miles off the Irish south-west coast, explained Mr Coveney, deputy leader of Ireland’s Fine Gael party.
