The important lesson is not that Labour is losing support. Rather, it is that the Conservatives are winning support – and in areas and among people who previously spurned the party.
There are many long-term reasons behind this reshaping of British politics but there is also one very specific reason: not since Margaret Thatcher was in her pomp has a Conservative leader had such sway among working people.
For all the Prime Minister’s electoral magic, however, that comparison with Baroness Thatcher is important in another respect. The man who was US president for most of her time in office, Ronald Reagan, used to quote the lyrics of a song, that you “Dance with the one that brung ya”. In other words, in politics you should always remember who it was that voted for you and why.
So long as Baroness Thatcher remembered that, she was able to win landslide re-elections. When she started to forget it and introduced ideas like the Poll Tax, everything unravelled.
That’s why today’s Queen’s Speech is so important to the Conservatives.
