The British Medical Association (BMA) described the new Health and Care Bill currently going through Parliament as the “wrong Bill at the wrong time”.
And the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) – which has 1.5 million members – warned that the planned changes will undermine the NHS and lead to more privatisation of treatments.
The Bill gives local health boards the power to arrange the provision of hospital services, but removes their legal duty to do so.
There is no provision to ensure in future that A&E and ambulance services will cover everyone in their local area.
