Sources yesterday said organised crime gangs send tiny crafts, often reinforced with duct tape or tarpaulin sheets, with fewer migrants into the English Channel in a bid to draw away the French navy.
Then bigger boats with dozens of migrants, mainly from countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan, Syria and Iraq, are sent across the Channel.
The UK has offered to patrol the Channel and send the migrants back to France – a claim rejected by Paris.
