Gran, 86, saves trees in chainsaw stand-off

A GRANDMOTHER aged 86 risked being arrested for the first time in her life as she won a protest against chopping down four trees.

Jo Smith said she was inspired to stay beside the trees for 12 hours in chilly November weather by the Martin Luther quote: “Here I stand, I can do no more.”

After some of the protesters spent the night guarding the 100-year-old trees, the landowner and local council gave in and said they would not be axed.
