It’s good news that the Government is announcing a free-speech champion to ensure all universities allow a diversity of opinions. For too long, radical students have been no-platforming invited speakers because they don’t go along with their own woke beliefs.
Its vital young people are exposed to a whole range of political and social views.
Ludicrously, a National Union of Students vice president claims: “There is no evidence of a freedom of expression crisis on campus.”
But that flies in the face of the reality experienced by many academics and guest speakers intimidated by woke mobs.
Oxford professor Selina Todd had to be protected by security guards at her lectures after she incurred the wrath of transactivists by stating the obvious truth that sexual identity is biological, not “assigned” at birth. She was shocked by her university’s lack of support, saying “they have never made a public statement in my defence”.
AMBER Rudd, the former Home Secretary, had her invitation to Oxford cancelled just half an hour before she was due to speak because of past government policies on immigration.
Quite rightly, she told snowflake students to “stop hiding and start engaging”.
