Richard Walker says the huge cost burden on shoppers is something the nation will have to get used to.

With inflation rocketing to a high of 40 per cent - amid warnings of further "apocalyptic" increases at the checkout - the businessman predicts more supermarket chains will begin losing customers to food banks.

He said: "I don't think we're ever going to see a dropping back now.
