It means sales of the green cars have overtaken diesels in the UK for the first time.
August was the first month – outside of the anomaly caused by the lockdown to car sales – that electric surpassed diesels.
Ben Nelmes, of transport research organisation New AutoMotive, said: “It’s great to see electric car sales going from strength to strength.
“Another 6,000 motorists are set to benefit from cheaper running costs, a better driving experience. And we all benefit from cleaner air.”
