Dunes... saved in the nicotine

SAND dunes once used as a dumping ground for tobacco waste are to become a haven for endangered toads.

The “tobacco cliffs” at Formby, Merseyside, were created from thousands of tons of old leaves tipped on the dunes by a nicotine plant from the 1950s until the 1970s.

Dramatic

Now, the National Trust has announced plans to breathe life into the site and create much-needed space for fresh wildlife, including the rare natterjack toad.
