‘Boost Surge Testing Now To Keep Track Of New Variants'

Public Health England has identified 33 cases of a variant first seen in Nigeria in December.

The variant – which carries the E484K mutation found on both the South African and Brazilian viruses – has been identified in 10 countries including America, Australia, and Denmark, according to a University of Edinburgh team.

Denmark has spotted the most cases (35), followed by the UK and then the US (10). It has also been detected in Jordan, France, Belgium, Ghana, and Spain.

None of these countries are on the Red List which, from Monday, obliged people arriving from them to quarantine in Government-sanctioned hotels.

The 33 countries on it include Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, and others in South America and southern Africa.
