The blueprint would see the Premier League reduced from 20 teams to 18, give greater powers to the so-called “Big Six” clubs and signal the end of the League Cup and Community Shield.
Yesterday the Premier League called the intervention by Rick Parry – chairman of the English Football League – “disappointing” and said the Project Big Picture proposals could have a “damaging impact” on the game.
In return, the EFL – which represents the 72 clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two – would receive 25 per cent of the Premier League’s annual income stream.
Mr Parry, who was one of the founders of the Premier League in 1992, said: “It is definitely going to be challenging and it is an enormous change so that won’t be without some pain.
