THE shocking scale of sexual misconduct towards women in the military has been revealed in a survey – adding to “a long line of reports” highlighting the issue.
It found female recruits face a major risk of emotional bullying, sexual harassment and physical assault in the Armed Forces.
Some 22.5 per cent or one in five said they had been sexually harassed, while 5.1 per cent recalled being sexually assaulted.
Emotional bullying was suffered by 22.7 per cent, while 3.3 per cent said they had been physically assaulted. Some 750 veterans were questioned. There are 16,500 women in our military, 11 per cent of all personnel.
Researchers said: “It is worth considering whether organisational and leadership changes can be made to better protect military women.”
And they note: “Even women holding higher power positions may be at risk of victimisation from their own superiors.”
