India is facing its worst electricity shortage in more than six years just as scorching temperatures force early closures of schools and send people indoors.
Extreme heat parched large swathes of South Asia this week after the country saw its hottest March on record, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to warn of rising fire risks as the country heats up too much too soon.
Local authorities in the worst-hit states are struggling to juggle power cuts and growing pressure on health services. An intense heatwave broiled Delhi, with the Safdarjung observatory recording a maximum temperature of 43.5°C, the highest in April in 12 years. The national capital had recorded a maximum temperature of 43.7 degrees Celsius on April 18, 2010. The all-time high temperature for the month was 45.6 degrees Celsius recorded on April 29, 1941. Neighbouring Gurugram crossed 45 degrees, the highest ever temperature in April.
Maximum temperatures recorded in six districts in West Bengal were at least 5°C above normal, weather officials said, with the lack of rainfall in Kolkata adding to its worries.
