Not being from a football background (I appreciate at this point many of you will decide my opinion therefore doesn’t count, but please read on) I do apply my business experience to the problems faced by the football club, and I am writing this column to share that alternative perspective.
I was actually in favour of the European Super League. Why not? Provided clubs can’t play in more than one league then this becomes the pre-eminent league in the world with the top clubs from across Europe competing against one another.
The way its constitution was proposed may not fully support a meritocracy, though there was an element of it, and we all love it when the small team wins the Premier League – but over time the money comes to the top. Why should they share it?
Look at the prime games shown by Sky: mostly they feature the bigger teams, so they are the ones generating the money. Being forced to share it? Why should they? You work hard or spend hard to deliver success but then are expected to share the spoils with others – why should you?
