KING’S Lynn Town chairman Stephen Cleeve believes some of the gloss will be taken off his side’s promotion if no-one else goes up with them.

While Cleeve is naturally delighted that the Linnets are set to make it back-to-back promotions by winning National League North on points per game (PPG), it hasn’t stopped him from having a degree of sympathy for their opponents, most notably York City.

When the Step 2 division came to a halt in mid-March, York topped the table. However, King’s Lynn leapfrogged them via PPG and it now looks almost certain they will have to remain in the second tier for another year.

With Step 2 play-offs set to be scrapped over government guidance on ‘elite’ sport barring a last-minute U-turn, the National League are proposing that only the table-toppers go up, with the results of a vote by clubs due tomorrow.
