The Rams were shocked by Chris Willcock’s midweek departure to Workington, but quickly appointed his former assistant as their new boss.

After a solid 2-0 success against the Shakers, Donafee said: “The way the lads have responded to me being appointed is a credit to all of them.

“I know it’s only a friendly but it’s a local derby and a first game for me so I’m really happy with the performance and the result.”

In a lively opening the home side came close with Jake Thompson’s early shot blocked and Jamie Rainford testing Jack Atkinson from distance.
