I love football as much as anyone, but, even as a Liverpool fan, I am not sure that I can totally agree with Bill Shankly’s famous quote about just how important the game is in the grand scheme of things.
However, given that this is a newspaper for those who share my love of our beautiful game, and especially of the Non-League variety, it would be a little strange for readers if I spend the whole column talking about COVID-19.
Of course, one of the key issues for the footballing world to resolve during these weeks of uncertainty is, ‘What do we do about the current season?’.
Lifeline
Some leagues have, of course, already decided that the only way forward is to declare the season over. That is tough to take for clubs at the top of the league and in the play-offs. But it is a lifeline to the teams at or near the bottom of their leagues, taking into account that records will be expunged.
There is a chance that the Premier League will eventually decide to hand Liverpool the title because they are so far ahead. However, even as a lifelong Kopite, I would not like to see this happen.
