John McAtee’s second-half goal was enough to hand the Mariners victory as they finally got their 2021/22 campaign underway, having had their curtain-raiser at Bromley postponed after a Covid outbreak.
The hosts were well worth the points at Blundell Park, although they had to work a little harder than they perhaps should have after controlling proceedings at home.
Ross Fitzsimons was kept busy during the first half in the visitors’ goal as he denied McAtee from a free-kick before he managed to prevent Erico Sousa from giving the hosts the lead after the winger found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
