The 24-year-old made the move up to Wearside at the start of last season, in the midst of the Netflix years, the club still smarting from relegation to League One.
It was something of a culture shock for the midfielder-right-back hybrid, who was born and raised in Hemel Hempstead, came through the ranks at Watford and made the short trip to Wycombe, where he would spend three fond years.
When the call came from the North-East, he jumped at the chance, but a tricky settling in period followed. But, with help from all around him, he battled through, earning his stripes as a Black Cat.

“It was a big change for me and it’s such a big club,” he said. “It’s not easy – you’ve just got to look at the history: many people have joined this club, even international players, and struggled to settle – and it’s a club that has huge expectations.
