TRIPURA HANDLOOMS AND HANDICRAFTS DEMAND HIGH IN INDIA
Northeast Today|October 2021
Handloom and handicraft products of Tripura are some of the most handpicked and vivacious products across India, having a unique aura and significance. The handloom products have elegant designs, unique colour combinations and long-lasting textures. The handloom industry of Tripura is the reflection of the Tribal, Manipuri and Bengali cultures.
Abhijit Nath

People engaged with handloom and handicrafts through different clusters, societies and entrepreneurs across Tripura have reaped good fruits by earning a better livelihood after the formation of the BJP-IPFT coalition government in 2018.

The Tripura Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (THHDCL), one among 31 public-sector undertakings (PSUs), has inquisitively prepared a road map towards achieving success in reaching out to the common people within the state and as well as across the country.

The wide range of handloom products available includes indigenous ‘Chamari Pasra’, ‘Risha’, cotton and silk sarees, bedsheet, woollen shirt metre, lungi, laisampi (Blanket), towel, napkin, and gown.

Various bamboo-made handicraft products include bottles of both copper and steel inside, bamboo-made cups and saucers, idols, dolls, furniture, chairs, tables, bags, etc.

Speaking to this correspondent, THHDCL chairman Balai Goswami said that the corporation has been reeling under huge financial constraints and running in loss during the previous LeftFront government’s regime of 25 years. It is still recovering and likely to get profitable within a year or two.
