ASSAM ELECTION 2021

As the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election is approaching in the state, things are getting interesting as all Political Parties are gearing up for the electoral battle. With the rise of more than one regional parties like Raijor Dol and Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and a submissive regional party like Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the election is providing different regional perspective to the people of Assam. A confident but issueless Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) and a confused Congress-led alliance are also adding to the cloudy scenario of the election.

The 2021Assam Legislative Assembly election is the 15th quinquennial legislative assembly election scheduled to be held in the state from March 27 to April 6 in three phases, to elect 126 MLAs to the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly.

In Phase-I, A total numbers of 47 assembly constituencies will go to polls while in PhaseII, voting for 39 number of seats will take place in the state. On the other hand, in the third phase, 40 assembly constituencies will go to polls. The results for the State Assembly Election will be announced on May 2.

In this Assembly election, a total numbers of 13 Political Parties are participating besides, numerous Independent candidates.

The main electoral battle will be fought between the BJP lead Alliance and the Congress lead Alliance which is called Mahajot. BJP along with AGP and United People's Party Liberal forms the Mitrojot Alliance. The BJP has replaced the Bodoland People's Front ( BPF) with its rival United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), which hardly had any presence in the last elections. Now, the BPF has joined the mahajot this time. Recently, in the Bodoland Territorial Council election (BTC) council election, UPPL and BJP alliance formed the government.

The Grand Alliance headed by Congress was initially a combination 8 national and regional parties which is popularly known as Mahajot in Assam. The congress led alliance has All India United Democratic Front, Bodoland People's Front, Anchalik Gana Morcha, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation and Rashtriya Janata Dal as partners. However, recently the size of the Congress-led Mahajot (grand alliance) family in poll-bound Assam has increased upto 10. Two community-based parties — Jimochayan (Deori) People’s Party, or JDPP, and Adivasi National Party (ANP) — together claim to have influence in some 50 of the State’s 126 Assembly seats. They joined the Mahajot during the past 72 hours.

With the inclusion of Bodoland People's Front (BPF), currently a part of the BJP-led state government, and the RJD, to further strengthen their position against the saffron party in the three-phase elections in Assam.

The Mahajot had six parties when it was formally announced on January 19, this year. These were the Congress, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the Communist Party of India, CPI (Marxist), the CPI (Marxist-Leninist) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha. Two others — former BJP ally the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal — joined later.

The newly-floated Assam Jatiya Parishad and jailed rights activist Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal have also forged a regional front to prevent the BJP from retaining power. Theirs is avowedly a forum against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which the Mahajot is also opposing. However, both AJP and Raijor Dol is confusing voters in many constituencies by projecting candidates from both parties in same constituencies.

In the previous elections in 2016, the election brought a change of power as the Indian National Congress (INC), which had formed the government under Tarun Gogoi since 2001, lost its majority to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led by Sarbananda Sonowal.
