CHAKMA AND HAJONG RAISE ISSUE OF NON-INCLUSION
Northeast Today|February 2021
On the National Voters' Day, Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students' Union (APCSU) highlighted the noninclusion of people from the Chakma and Hajong community in the voter list of the state.
CHAKMA AND HAJONG RAISE ISSUE OF NON-INCLUSION

In a press statement, APCSU said the main purpose behind celebrating National Voters' Day is to encourage, facilitate and maximise enrolment, especially for the new voters. However, in Arunachal, the day goes contrary from its main aim. APCSU and Chakma Youth Federation of Arunachal (CYFA) said, Applications of Chakmas and Hajongs are rejected by EROs [Electoral Registration Officers] without any valid reasons despite submitting all the necessary documentation.

The organisation said, thousands of eligible applicants who are above 18 years from their respective polling stations and constituency has applied during the special summary revision conducted in the month of November-December 2020. Out of which, only few were enrolled in the voters list and the percentage of approved applicants is in decimal only. APCSU and CYFA said they would raise the issue with the Election Commission of India, Prime Minister's Office, and the state government for urgent intervention.
