Sruthi Hariharan in Conversation
Karnataka Today|March 2017

Sruthi Hariharan became a heroine in Sandalwood by accident. She is different from other heroines perhaps – When you meet her, her simplicity, humility and warmth stand out. Currently, the gregarious actress is basking in the success of her recent film Beautiful Manasugalu. She says that her aspiration was not to become an actress but to associate with an art form. To this end she began her career as an assistant choreographer with Imran Sardaria, but now she is the busiest actress in Sandalwood. Recently the beautiful and talented actress spoke to Y Maheswara Reddy. Here’s what she had to say.

Sruthi Hariharan in Conversation

Your recent film Beautiful Manasugalu has succeeded in making its producer and distributor happy. It is considered a successful film. How did you react when the producer told you about the success of the film?

I am neither carried away by the success nor disappointed with the failure of my films at the box office. It is true that success of my films makes me happy but I am not disappointed when my films are not received well by the cine-goers. I treat success and failure equally. I was not carried away when my films such as Lucia, Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu and Beautiful Manasugalu were received well by the cine-goers.

Neither was I disappointed when my films Sipayi and Madha Maththu Manasi crashed beyond redemption at the box office. These films were withdrawn from theatres as soon as they were released across the state. Also my other film Jai Maruthi 800 also failed to meet my expectations. I want to make it clear that success or failure will not affect me. What makes me happy is when people recall my films and appreciate my performance in those films.

Can you elaborate on your journey in Sandalwood?

I never dreamt of becoming an actress. I wanted to be associated with art and learnt dance and joined Imran Sardaria as an assistant choreographer. I wanted to continue as choreographer but destiny had other ideas for me.

The Cauvery dilemma
Karnataka Today

The Cauvery dilemma

Both north and south Karnataka are in a tizzy over water. North Karnataka over the utilisation of waters of the Mahadayi River (see article on Page 24) and South Karnataka over the utilization of the Cauvery River. This is probably the result of a skewed discourse which is framed by the limited terms of water availability. It’s an I win you lose kind of discourse - water allocated to one state is the loss of another, and the water that reaches the sea is a waste. Is there a way to deal with these disputes other than the legal? Prabhu Mallikarjunan traces the history and outcome of the dispute and puts forth the farmer’s perspective.
