BLUE HILL—The George Stevens Academy volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with a 3-2 win over Jonesport-Beals at home on October 22, but it was not without drama and a little nail biting.
Monique Labbe

After easily handling the Royalettes for a 25-11 first-set win, the momentum shifted to the Jonesport side of the court in the second set. Jonesport recorded the first two points of the set to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Eagles responded with five straight points of their own to take a three-point lead. The set tied up at 9-9, and again at 11-11 and 15-15. The Royalettes then outscored GSA 4-1, forcing co-coach Aleta Schmidt to call a timeout. The score was tied five more times before Jonesport eventually took a 25-23 win, tying the match at 1-1.

Editor’s note: This is the first in what will be many twice-monthly columns to be written by Bill Haviland about the history of Indians on Deer Isle from the end of the ice age to the time of European settlement. We are delighted and proud to have Bill, with his vast experience and passion for history, chronicling Indian activity and seasonal settlement on the Island. Our intention is to publish this material to help Islanders and visitors alike understand and appreciate those who were here first.
