After defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary byelections in March 2018, Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav was the first to call Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati to thank her for her support to the SP candidates. His son and party president Akhilesh Yadav followed it up with a visit to her house on Mall Avenue in Lucknow. This was a precursor to the unprecedented development in Uttar Pradesh politics this January—a gathbandhan between the SP and BSP after decades of bitter rivalry.
