Tapped harmonics can be used in a variety of styles, from hard rock lead guitar squeals to jazzy chimes, to percussive acoustic harmonic slaps. The tapped harmonic technique is performed as a quick flick of the second finger of the picking hand onto the string. An accurately placed, momentary strike of the string both causes the string to vibrate as well as creating a chiming harmonic. The beauty of this technique is that it works equally well for open strings as it does for fretted notes, opening up harmonics all over the fretboard in any key you like.
