I got into bass after I turned up at a local rock school about 20 years ago, guitar in hand—and somehow left playing bass with a band. It’s that classic thing of being the least assertive guitarist in the room! My first bass was a Yamaha fretless, which I had on loan for a few years until its owner sold it to me for $70. It served me well for many years, and really made me focus on playing with feeling. I’m still very fond of it and take it out occasionally.
