Tell me, how does a Jersey girl find herself on the other side of the globe as a tattoo artist?I was working as a graphic designer at Rutgers University. As you know, winters in New Jersey are cold and snowy, and I never enjoyed NJ winters. It was right around the time when Instagram first came out, and I suddenly had access, right on my cell phone, to photos taken by people all over the world of beautiful sunny places, pristine beaches, and insanely awesome tattoo work. I was honestly sick of New Jersey and couldn&rsquo;t really see myself advancing my career in graphic design, which was a career I had chosen in college because I was always warned against being a starving artist. After finishing art school, painting and drawing was a hobby that I spent most nights after work on.<img src="https://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/7723/384735/5dce778bf0fc9/1573812167_loc.jpg"" owidth=430 oheight=489" style="height:455px; width:400px" />After finishing my master&rsquo;s degree, I decided I needed a vacation, and I visited Australia and really loved it; I then made the risky decision to move there. I had a lot of struggles, to put it all extremely lightly, at first. After some time, I managed to get a job managing Third Eye Tattoo in Melbourne, which is an amazing studio filled with fantastically talented artists. I was interested in tattoos and the tattoo industry, but I wasn&rsquo;t sure whether I wanted to commit to a career change until I was able to really see it from the inside. After living in Melbourne for about 3 years, I moved to Brisbane. I applied for a tattoo apprenticeship in Cairnes but was rejected as I didn&rsquo;t live in Cairnes and getting the apprenticeship would mean me relocating. Deciding I would like to go back to managing a tattoo studio, I quit my retail job and got a job managing Wild at Heart Tattoo in Brisbane. Throughout all of my time in Australia, I was also freelancing as an illustrator and managed to build up a pretty cool portfolio of unique drawings, and I always painted and drew in my spare time. Is that a carry over from your illustrations or is it something you developed? And part two of that would be your style and any influences.I would probably say that the stippling/dotwork in my work is a combination of both a carry over from some of my illustrative work and something I began using in my tattoos as I&rsquo;ve found it to be extremely visually appealing. I have always loved and worked with pointillism in my illustrations; I&rsquo;ve always been drawn to the precision of the dot and the ability to create a wide array of textures and lights and darks with a very fine tool. I find dotwork similarly satisfying in a tattoo format, due to my appreciation for the precision I feel I&rsquo;m able to achieve in placing each dot in the skin to create different effects.I am influenced by a myriad of things artistically, probably most notably, antique tribal and ethnic jewellery, patterns in nature, and the illustrations of Beatrix Potter.<img src="https://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/7723/384735/5dce778bf0fc9/1573812183_loc.jpg"" owidth=679 oheight=280" style="height:247px; width:600px" />What&rsquo;s your set-up? Inks, machines, after-care, etc.I have a few machines that I cycle thru depending on what the tattoo calls for. I&rsquo;d probably say one of my favorite machines is an FK Irons shader; it&rsquo;s super light, and gets the job done, from soft greys to color packing. I use Dynamic black for lining and Fusion greywashes. For color, I don&rsquo;t necessarily have a particular brand that I prefer, but I use mostly Fusion, Solid, and Eternal inks, depending on what colors I find work well. For needles, I love Black Claw! For after-care, I recommend any brand that&rsquo;s natural and preferably organic ingredients.
