Arthur Fleck is immediately shown as a face in the crowd within a Gotham City struggling with crime and poverty among the lower classes. Living with his mother, Arthur is determined to become a successful comedian in order to provide for her. However, a disorder that causes him to laugh at inappropriate times hinders Arthur&rsquo;s pursuit in both a working and personal nature, as he relies on the social services for medication. The film looks at how poverty, crime, depression, loneliness, and a desire for power can effect a marginalised individual in a modern society obsessed with image and the media.Many have claimed that the film is irresponsible to portray a character who kills people as a misunderstood man, especially after the cinema shootings that followed one of The Joker&rsquo;s last big-screen appearances. However, I believe that this Todd Phillips picture is an extremely important piece of cinema, for that very same reason. The fact is that some people took the decision to dress up as The Joker and open fire inside cinemas across America.Likewise, shooters break into schools to do the same thing each and every year across the country. These people exist in our society and it is important to acknowledge them and take a closer look into their behaviour and what can push a person to such actions.If you compare it to the trend of serial killer documentaries in recent years, no one complained that the Ted Bundy film might persuade someone to become a killer. The fact is that cinema portrays the good and the bad, and The Joker was unsettlingly detailed in its portrayal of how a person can slip from one side to the other.I would give the film five stars and rate it as a genre-defining must-see.
