FHM Magazine South Africa|September 2021
The Detective mystery genre has always been prevalent across all media since time immemorial, from classic novels like the Sherlock Holmes series to classic TV shows like Columbo or the recent True Detective series. Who doesn’t love a good mystery and shocking revelation at the end? Fortunately for fans of the above, gaming has always been a fantastic platform for mystery and solving crimes and the following games are a testament to that. Here are some of our favourite detective games you can play right now.
L.A. Noire

We’ll start with the obvious one, a game that perfectly captures the 40’s detective drama. L.A. Noire sees players take the role of Cole Phelps, a detective that works up the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department. From starting a beat officer, Phelps will work his way up the various departments, from Homicide to Vice to Arson as he and his various partners try to solve some of the best crime cases in gaming. The game made a splash when it was originally released for its use of groundbreaking facial motion capture technology, allowing the player to see visual clues in the perps faces, knowing if they’re lying or not. It was a game unlike any other and one of the best outright detective games you can play right now.

Judgment

Fans of the brilliant Yakuza series was pleasantly surprised when Sega announced they will release a new game set in the Yakuza world, yet you won’t be playing as a beloved Yakuza chairman Kazuma Kiryu, instead, you will be playing on the right side of the law, a former attorney turned private detective Takayuki Yagami. All the hallmarks of a Yakuza game are still present, however, from the random battles on the street with low-life thugs to the wacky and outlandish side stories, now labeled as side cases. Although the detective side of things is a bit bare-bones, the overall story arc is a wonderful tale of whodunnit, and even seasoned detective gamers will be surprised at the numerous twists and turns. Judgment. If you’ve always been a fan of the Yakuza series, then this game is essential.
