Nicolas Cage is an enigma, an actor who can go from an Oscar-winning performance to bargain-bin trash within a week. A man that has done over 118 movies in his career, most of them absolute garbage. Yet he is one of the best actors around, an actor that can deliver a performance that moves you, that sticks with you. Of course, the reason behind the multitude of movies is his troubles with the law, his incredible debt and sometimes his terrible movie selection. And although 90% of his movie roles are embarrassingly bad, he has starred in some of the best movies around. Here are some of our favorite, and best, Nicolas Cage movies that prove the man is a genius.
WILD AT HEART
David Lynch is a wonderful director that makes wonderfully weird and out there movies. The perfect director for the wonderfully weird Nicolas Cage. Wild at Heart doesn’t get enough credit in the Lynch filmography, but some might feel it’s one of his best. After serving prison time for a self-defense killing, Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) reunites with girlfriend Lula Fortune (Laura Dern). Lula's mother, Marietta, desperate to keep them apart, hires a hitman to kill Sailor. But he finds a whole new set of troubles when he and Bobby Peru, an old buddy who's also out to get Sailor, try to rob a store. When Sailor lands in jail yet again, the young lovers appear further than ever from the shared life they covet. Lynch allows his cast to explore their characters and Cage takes full advantage of it. Even though his character Sailor should not be a likable guy, Cage’s wonderful performance makes you root for the jailbird every time.
